A walkway fails differently than a patio or driveway, and it usually fails in a way that matters more, because someone’s going to trip on it. Walkways are narrow, which means less concrete mass to resist movement, and they’re often poured close to the house or mature trees, which means root intrusion and foundation-adjacent soil movement are common causes of the unevenness we get called out for.
Freeze-thaw cycling hits walkways just as hard as any other outdoor slab, but the joints matter more here, a walkway has more joints per square foot than a patio or driveway, and each one is a place where a slab can lift, settle, or separate from its neighbor. Add de-icing salt from winter foot traffic and you get the scaling, pitting, and joint deterioration that turns a smooth walkway into an uneven, chipped one.
That’s why we don’t treat a walkway repair like a smaller version of a patio job. Whatever we recommend, replacement, resurfacing, or a protective coating, it’s chosen to solve the specific reason your walkway moved, not just to make the surface look better until it moves again.

If your walkway is structurally sound settled evenly, no significant trip hazards at the joints, a stable subbase, a coating or resurfacing system is usually the right call. It restores the surface, adds slip resistance, and protects the concrete going forward for a fraction of what full replacement costs.
If individual slabs have heaved or sunk relative to their neighbors, if tree roots are actively pushing sections out of level, or if cracking has gone past what resurfacing can hide, we’ll tell you that too. A walkway with a real trip hazard isn’t a cosmetic problem, it’s a liability, and no surface coating fixes an underlying grade or root problem. In those cases, targeted or full replacement is the honest recommendation: correcting the subbase, addressing root intrusion, and re-pouring to a level, properly jointed surface.

It depends on the cause and severity. If it’s cosmetic wear on an otherwise level, stable walkway, a coating or resurfacing system usually solves it. If individual slabs have shifted enough to create a trip hazard, that’s a grading and subbase issue a coating can’t fix, we’ll tell you honestly which situation you’re in.
Most often it’s tree roots, poor original subbase compaction, or freeze-thaw movement working on a narrow slab with a lot of joints. Part of our assessment is identifying the actual cause so we can correct it, not just re-pour over the same problem.
It can be. A raised or sunken joint is one of the most common trip-and-fall hazards on residential and commercial property. If that’s what we find, we’ll flag it clearly rather than treat it as a minor cosmetic issue.
