Concrete Driveway Replacement

Most concrete driveways are poured at 4 inches with no rebar — the minimum standard that most contractors quote and most homeowners never question. ArmorSlab™ driveway replacement pours at 6 inches minimum with BridgeBuilt™ rebar reinforcement, fiber in the mix, and a documented pre-pour inspection. That's 20% more thickness, 44% more bending capacity, and 73% more stiffness than a standard driveway — backed by a 10-Year Structural Warranty.

The Problem

Most Driveways Are
Built to the Minimum.
Yours Doesn't Have to Be.

A driveway carries more load, more cycles, and more weather exposure than almost any other concrete surface on your property. Indiana winters are particularly brutal — freeze-thaw cycles, road salt, and the weight of vehicles sitting on a slab that was poured just thick enough to pass inspection. Here's why most driveways don't hold up.

Cracked and deteriorated driveway concrete needing replacement Fort Wayne
Poured Too Thin

The standard residential driveway is poured at 4 inches — the industry minimum. A 4" slab without rebar doesn't have the structural capacity to handle decades of vehicle loads and freeze-thaw cycling. It's not a question of if it will crack. It's when.

No Rebar

Most residential driveways are poured unreinforced or with wire mesh that ends up at the bottom of the pour doing nothing. Without properly elevated rebar in the structural center of the slab, there's no tensile strength holding the concrete together when it wants to crack.

Poor Base Preparation

A driveway is only as stable as the base beneath it. Uncompacted subgrade, insufficient aggregate depth, and poor drainage setup cause slabs to settle unevenly — creating the heaved sections and low spots that collect water and accelerate freeze-thaw cracking.

Road Salt Damage

Salt tracked in from Indiana roads penetrates concrete pores, causes surface scaling and spalling, and accelerates steel corrosion in any rebar present. A properly sealed or coated driveway surface significantly reduces the rate of salt damage over time.

"If your driveway can still be coated rather than replaced, we'll tell you that. We do coatings too — there's no incentive to push you to replacement if a coating holds."

How It's Built

The ArmorSlab™
Driveway Standard.

Standard driveway replacement pours at 5 inches. ArmorSlab™ driveway replacement pours at a minimum 6 inches — 20% thicker, with 44% more bending capacity and 73% more stiffness. Every step of the build is documented before concrete is placed.

1
Remove the Old Driveway

Full mechanical removal and haul-off of the existing slab. No overlays, no resurfacing over a failed base. Complete removal so every decision about what goes back down is made correctly from the start.

2
Subgrade Assessment & Compacted Base

We assess the subgrade for soft spots, voids, and drainage issues — then build and mechanically compact an aggregate base at the correct depth. The base is what prevents a new driveway from settling unevenly under years of vehicle load.

3
BridgeBuilt™ Rebar Reinforcement

#4 steel rebar laid in a proper grid on approved plastic chairs — elevated to sit in the structural center of the slab. This is the tensile reinforcement that resists cracking from vehicle loads and ground movement. Rebar on the ground is nearly useless. Properly elevated rebar is what holds a driveway together for decades.

4
Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Mix

High-strength, air-entrained exterior concrete with fiber reinforcement mixed in throughout. Works alongside the rebar to reduce micro-cracking during curing and improve the slab's surface impact resistance — particularly important on a surface that takes vehicle loads and road salt year-round.

5
6" Minimum Pour — Correct Slope & Drainage

Poured at 6" minimum — 20% thicker than the standard 5" driveway. Set at the correct slope to drain water away from your home and garage. Control joints cut at proper spacing. Broom finish for traction; smooth or exposed aggregate finish available on request.

6
Pre-Pour Documentation

Before any concrete is poured we photograph the compacted base, rebar layout and chair elevation, form setup, depth verification, and drainage slope. You receive the full pre-pour inspection record — the documented foundation of the 10-Year Structural Warranty on qualifying driveways.

The Warranty

10-Year Structural Warranty.
In Writing. Before We Start.

Most concrete contractors hand you a finished driveway and walk away. Qualifying ArmorSlab™ driveway replacements come with a 10-Year Structural Warranty covering structural failure from defective installation or workmanship — in the contract before the truck arrives.

✓ Structural failure from defective installation or workmanship
✓ Pre-pour documentation confirms the build standard before concrete is placed
✓ 10-year coverage on qualifying ArmorSlab™ driveway installations
Not a No-Crack Guarantee

All concrete cracks — including driveways. Control joints are cut specifically to direct that movement to planned, inconspicuous locations. A crack at a control joint is expected and is not a warranty issue. The 10-Year Structural Warranty covers qualifying structural failure from defective installation or workmanship. We walk through this clearly at the estimate so there are no surprises later.

Coat It After It Cures

Once your new driveway has fully cured — 28 days for full concrete strength — it can be coated with ArmorCore™ to add color, surface protection, and resistance to road salt and oil absorption. A coated driveway also cleans significantly easier than bare concrete and resists staining long-term. Many homeowners plan both from the start. Ask about combining both at your free estimate.

FAQ

Common Questions About
Driveway Replacement.

Does my driveway need to be replaced or can it be coated?+
The free estimate answers that specifically. If the existing concrete is structurally sound with surface wear, staining, or cosmetic cracking, ArmorCore™ coating can hold and often makes more sense than replacement. If the slab is heaving, severely cracked through its full depth, crumbling, or has widespread spalling, replacement is the right call. We do both — so we have no incentive to push you toward the more expensive option when coating would do the job.
Why does ArmorSlab™ pour at 6 inches instead of the standard 4 or 5?+
Most residential driveways are poured at 4 inches — the minimum standard for a code-compliant pour. Some contractors go to 5. ArmorSlab™ pours at 6 inches minimum because driveways carry real load — passenger vehicles, SUVs, trucks, delivery vehicles, and occasionally heavy equipment. The extra thickness adds 20% more concrete, 44% more bending capacity, and 73% more stiffness compared to a standard 5" pour. That difference shows up years from now when a standard replacement is cracking and yours isn't.
What is BridgeBuilt™ rebar reinforcement?+
BridgeBuilt™ is Outback's rebar reinforcement standard — #4 steel rebar in a proper grid on approved plastic chairs, elevated so it sits in the structural center of the pour rather than resting on the base. Rebar positioned at the bottom of a slab provides almost no benefit. Correctly elevated rebar is what gives concrete the tensile strength to resist cracking from vehicle loads and ground movement over time.
How long does driveway replacement take?+
Demo and pour typically complete in one to two days depending on driveway size and complexity. Foot traffic is generally safe after 24–48 hours. Vehicle traffic needs 5–7 days minimum — full concrete strength is reached at 28 days, and we recommend waiting the full cure period before returning heavy vehicles or parking an RV or trailer on it.
Does the 10-Year Structural Warranty mean my driveway won't crack?+
No — all concrete cracks and any contractor promising otherwise isn't being straight with you. Control joints are cut into the slab to direct that inevitable movement to planned locations. Cracks at control joints are expected and not a warranty issue. The 10-Year Structural Warranty covers qualifying structural failure from defective installation or workmanship. We walk through this at every estimate so expectations are set correctly before any work begins.
Can you replace just part of the driveway?+
Yes — partial driveway replacement is common when only certain sections have failed while the rest of the slab is still sound. We can replace individual sections, the apron where the driveway meets the street, or specific panels that have heaved from root pressure or frost. We'll scope it accurately at the estimate and tell you if a partial or full replacement is the smarter call for your specific situation.
Can I widen or extend my driveway at the same time?+
Yes — combining a full replacement with a widening or extension is the most cost-effective time to do it since the setup, base work, and equipment are already mobilized. If you've always wanted more room to park a second vehicle or get a truck fully off the street, bringing it up at the estimate gives us the chance to price the full scope together.
Can I coat the new driveway after it cures?+
Yes. After 28 days of curing, a new ArmorSlab™ driveway is an ideal substrate for ArmorCore™ coating — clean, well-prepped concrete at the correct thickness. Coating adds color, protects against road salt and oil penetration, and makes the surface dramatically easier to clean. Many homeowners plan both together. Ask about pricing them as a package at your estimate.
