Concrete Walkway replacement

Walkways take a different kind of abuse than a patio or driveway. When a walkway starts to settle unevenly, heave at the joints, or crack along its length, it stops being a convenience and starts being a trip hazard. We don't just patch the slab you can see. We find out why it moved in the first place, and fix that too.

Why Walkways Need a Different System

A walkway fails differently than a patio or driveway, and it usually fails in a way that matters more, because someone’s going to trip on it. Walkways are narrow, which means less concrete mass to resist movement, and they’re often poured close to the house or mature trees, which means root intrusion and foundation-adjacent soil movement are common causes of the unevenness we get called out for.

Freeze-thaw cycling hits walkways just as hard as any other outdoor slab, but the joints matter more here, a walkway has more joints per square foot than a patio or driveway, and each one is a place where a slab can lift, settle, or separate from its neighbor. Add de-icing salt from winter foot traffic and you get the scaling, pitting, and joint deterioration that turns a smooth walkway into an uneven, chipped one.

That’s why we don’t treat a walkway repair like a smaller version of a patio job. Whatever we recommend, replacement, resurfacing, or a protective coating, it’s chosen to solve the specific reason your walkway moved, not just to make the surface look better until it moves again.

Not Every Walkway Needs the Same Solution

We’d rather tell you the truth than sell you the easiest option. Before we quote anything, we find out what’s actually causing the problem.

If your walkway is structurally sound settled evenly, no significant trip hazards at the joints, a stable subbase, a coating or resurfacing system is usually the right call. It restores the surface, adds slip resistance, and protects the concrete going forward for a fraction of what full replacement costs.

If individual slabs have heaved or sunk relative to their neighbors, if tree roots are actively pushing sections out of level, or if cracking has gone past what resurfacing can hide, we’ll tell you that too. A walkway with a real trip hazard isn’t a cosmetic problem, it’s a liability, and no surface coating fixes an underlying grade or root problem. In those cases, targeted or full replacement is the honest recommendation: correcting the subbase, addressing root intrusion, and re-pouring to a level, properly jointed surface.

Every walkway quote starts with an honest assessment, not a sales pitch.

Assessment & Recommendation

Every project starts with a site evaluation. We look at the concrete's structural condition, the pattern and depth of cracking, the subbase condition, drainage, and the intended use of the surface. If replacement is the right answer, we say so. If it isn't, we say that to

Removal & Demolition

Clean, professional removal of the existing slab. We haul everything off-site. The subbase is evaluated and prepared, compacted, graded, and addressed where necessary, before any new concrete goes down. This step is where most concrete replacements cut corners. We do

Forming & Preparation

Forms are set to the correct grade, slope, and dimension. Proper drainage slope is not optional, it's engineered into every project. Control joints are planned and placed to manage where the concrete will crack as it cures and ages, rather than leaving that to chance.

Built for Fort Wayne Weather

Indiana isn’t a gentle climate for a narrow slab that takes the brunt of winter foot traffic and de-icing salt. We get real freeze-thaw cycling, salt that’s hard on unprotected concrete, and, along walkways especially, tree roots and moisture that don’t stop moving just because the concrete is poured.

Our walkway systems are built specifically with that in mind:

  • Freeze-thaw and joint stability proper sub-base prep and joint planning so slabs move together instead of against each other.
  • De-icing salt resistance protective systems that stand up to winter salt without the scaling and pitting bare concrete shows at the joints first.
  • Level, even surfaces corrected grading that removes the trip hazards uneven settling creates, not just a fresh top coat over the same slope problem.
  • Root-aware preparation addressing the actual cause of movement near trees and foundations, not just the symptom on top.

Concrete Walkway Replacement Frequently Asked Questions

My walkway has settled unevenly, do I need full replacement, or can this be fixed another way?

It depends on the cause and severity. If it’s cosmetic wear on an otherwise level, stable walkway, a coating or resurfacing system usually solves it. If individual slabs have shifted enough to create a trip hazard, that’s a grading and subbase issue a coating can’t fix, we’ll tell you honestly which situation you’re in.

Most often it’s tree roots, poor original subbase compaction, or freeze-thaw movement working on a narrow slab with a lot of joints. Part of our assessment is identifying the actual cause so we can correct it, not just re-pour over the same problem.

It can be. A raised or sunken joint is one of the most common trip-and-fall hazards on residential and commercial property. If that’s what we find, we’ll flag it clearly rather than treat it as a minor cosmetic issue.

Walkway sections are typically smaller and faster than a full patio or driveway, but timelines depend on scope, a short entry path is a different job than a full sidewalk run. We’ll give you a specific timeline during your quote.

Bare, unprotected concrete is especially vulnerable to salt scaling at walkway joints, since that’s where winter foot traffic concentrates it. Our protective systems are chosen to resist that.

Yes. Where a walkway ties into another surface we’re also coating or replacing, we plan the transition and finish so it reads as one connected system rather than mismatched sections.

Routine sweeping and occasional hosing is typically all it needs. Because our protective systems are non-porous, they don’t require the annual sealing that bare concrete does.
